Legendary cocktail bar in Camden

The cocktail bar "The Hawley Arms" in London, England, is much more than just an ordinary bar – it is a legendary pub deeply rooted in the city's music and pop culture. Located in the vibrant district of Camden Town, this venue has transformed into an iconic meeting point since its revival in the early 21st century, known for both its historical significance and lively atmosphere. Originally opened in 1851 as the "Hawley Arms Tavern," the building has gone through various phases over the decades, including a period as a biker hangout in the 1980s and 1990s. Since 2004, it has been operated by the current owners, who lovingly transformed it into a two-story pub with a unique character, offering a blend of tradition and modern flair.

Pub with live music in London

The interior of the "Hawley Arms" is a real eye-catcher: high ceilings with fans, large mirrors, and long windows give the space a sense of nostalgia, while bare floorboards, sofas, and a jukebox create a casual and inviting ambiance. The pub extends over two floors, with the upper level regularly used for live music – an aspect that makes it a hotspot for music lovers. Particularly proud of its rooftop terrace, the pub offers a relaxed retreat with views over Camden on sunny days. The walls are adorned with pictures of famous personalities like Amy Winehouse, who often frequented the pub, securing its special place in pop history. The atmosphere is vibrant and sociable, often accompanied by indie music or live performances, underscoring the venue's reputation as a cultural hub.

Best pub food at Hawley Arms

Culinary offerings focus on classic pub fare with an emphasis on hearty dishes. The Sunday Roast is especially popular, served with juicy meats – such as beef or pork – massive Yorkshire puddings, and fresh vegetables, making it a true crowd-pleaser. Homemade burgers, like the "Hawley Burger," are also appreciated for their quality and bold flavors, often accompanied by crispy fries. The bar additionally offers a variety of snacks, served in pint glasses, such as fries with various dips – a nod to the pub's unconventional yet charming style. The food is straightforward and designed to leave guests satisfied without being overly complicated.

Historical significance of Hawley Arms

The drink selection is another strength of the "Hawley Arms." The pub is known for its extensive range of beers, including traditional cask ales and a rotating selection of craft beers, often sourced from local breweries. They take particular pride in their cocktail menu, which, while not as extensive as those found in specialized bars, features classics like the "Rickstasy" – a mix of vodka, banana liqueur, Southern Comfort, and Baileys – reportedly a favorite of Amy Winehouse herself. Non-alcoholic options and a selection of teas and coffees are also available, making the pub accessible for all occasions. The service is friendly and efficient: guests order at the bar, but food is brought to the table, keeping the process straightforward.

Stylish pub conveniently located near the market, perfect for a pit stop. The roof garden is a really lovely spot when the sun is out.

Parfait pour un sunday roast en sortant d'une balade au marché de Camden. Accueil sympa, bonnes bières et cadre typique.

Absolutely shambolic. From the moment we arrived, the bouncer had an attitude and I wanted to leave after that first interaction. The bartender wasn’t much better—rude, dismissive, and seemingly incapable of making a proper drink. Ordered a vodka and coke, and I’d be genuinely shocked if it had so much as SEEN a bottle of vodka. Might as well have been a straight-up coke. The toilets? A disgrace. Filthy, neglected, and reeking of poor management. I’ll admit, the outdoor area is quite charming with its fairy lights and picnic tables, and the interior itself is decent enough. But let’s be honest—this place is coasting on the fumes of Amy Winehouse’s name rather than offering anything of real quality. Won’t be making the mistake of returning.

A really cool and quirky pub. Nice little smoking area out the back and lots of cool punk memorabilia on the walls
